Going to Kindergarten is a big step for most children - and for their families. Franklin County Success By Six has produced a twelve-minute video to help families prepare for this major event. The video, Off to School: A Parent's Guide to Kindergarten, is available at the Mary Babcock School and the Swanton Public Library.  Families are welcome to borrow the video free of charge. The Vermont Department of Education's booklet Off to Kindergarten: A Booklet for Parents, Caregivers, and Schools is also available at no cost. This guide is designed to help children and their families make the transition to kindergarten a positive experience. Call 1-800-PARENTS to request a copy by mail.

All elementary schools in Franklin County sponsor activities to welcome children and families to kindergarten. Swanton Schools support children and families during the year before kindergarten.  Beginning in January, we will mail a newsletter to any interested parent or child care provider.  The newsletter has information about events for young children in the Swanton community.  In addition, each newsletter has practical ideas for helping children develop in five key areas of school readiness.  Swanton parents and providers may also sign up for the lending library of preschool learning materials.  The lending library is housed at the Swanton Public library.  Interested parents or providers should call the school at 868-4920 to learn more about the monthly newsletter and lending library.  Parents who register will receive our "Off to School" booklet and a kindergarten readiness booklet from the State of Vermont.

Information about Kindergarten transition activities is also available online. Visit us at www.PreKLearning.org for a wealth of information on Swanton School Programs & School Readiness Resources.

Parent cooperative playgroups also offer suggestions and resources for helping children and families with the transition to kindergarten.

Wondering if your 3 or 4 year old is acquiring the skills they need to be ready for Kindergarten? If you are concerned about how your child is developing, Franklin County Early Childhood Programs can help. They offer relaxed, play-based screening to Highgate, Franklin, Swanton & Sheldon children ages 3 or 4. They recommend resources to help your child be ready for school or let you know they are acquiring the skills they need. Call 868-4457 to schedule a screening.
